> Why is hearing protection required?

We are living in a world where sound is all around us all the time and we get used to it quickly. Even when the sound level around you is very high. Just think of the factory floor or visiting a dance party or concert...
The intensity of sound is expressed in dB. Exposure to a sound level of 80 dB during an 8-hour period is commonly regarded as the safety limit. Exposure to sounds above 80 dB can lead to hearing impairment. When you realise that there is an average sound level of 90-130 dB during concerts, you will understand that wearing some kind of hearing protection is necessary.
As a general rule you could say that sound can have adverse effects on your hearing when you are at arm's length of a sound source and you have to shout to make yourself understood. Therefore you should always bring your Noizezz, as you never know when you will need them.
> When does hearing impairment occur?

The ear is a sensitive sense that is able to perceive both very soft and very loud sounds. The sound is guided to the cochlea through the pinna, ear canal, ear drum and the ossicles. Within the cochlea, cilia are located, which convert the sound into electric impulses that are sent to the brain through the auditory nerve. The brain makes sure that we recognise a certain sound from these signals.
When you are exposed to loud noise, these cilia can be damaged. After spending an evening out you will have more trouble understanding people and you may hear a slight beep in your ears. The cilia usually recover, but if you are exposed to loud noise often and for long stretches of time, the cilia will be too badly damaged and permanent hearing loss with occur.
Hearing impairment is initially unobtrusive and occurs slowly in most cases. It is a creeping enemy: you do not see - or hear - it coming.
